Winifred Bernice Waugh

Winifred Bernice Waugh of Bronx, New York passed away on June 11th, 2022. She was 88 years old. Born in Christiana, Jamaica, Winifred was number seven of ten children. She was raised in Jamaica where she attended primary and secondary school. After graduating secondary school Winifred would work for the post office for many years. It was during her career at the post office she would meet her husband Roy of 53 years. They met at a wedding and would get married soon after. Winifred was a devout Christian, and her strong faith would serve her well throughout her life. She had 6 children. Due to circumstance beyond her control, she lost 5 children at birth. She raised her sixth child Wally with her husband. 

In 1968 Winifred and Roy would move to the United States to seek a better life for their son. The couple moved to Brooklyn and later the Bronx. Winifred worked for American Express where she worked up through the ranks. She had perfect attendance up until her retirement as supervisor. 

In her spare time Winifred loved to bake. She will be remembered by all for her famous black cake. Everyone loved Winifred’s black cake along with her cookies and other treats. Winifred also loved to sew and cook. When times were tough, she sewed clothes for her family and others. Despite her difficulty at hearing, she loved gospel music. You could often hear her humming “What a friend we have in Jesus” off tune. 

Winifred will be remembered as a strong, giving, and charitable person. She would do anything to help someone in need whether it was giving her time, attention, money or just a hug she was always there for those that needed her.

Winifred is survived by her son Wally, daughter-in-law Ilana, her grandchildren Christopher and Courtney as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her sister Lucy and Laura. Winifred will be missed by everyone who knew her. She is predeceased by her husband; Roy, her five children as well as her brothers and sisters.

A celebration of Winifred’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, New York on Wednesday, June 15th from 4-8pm. The Funeral Service will take place at Pelham Funeral Home on Thursday, June 16th at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery at 11:15am.
