Richard Paul Burrell of New Rochelle, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 23, 2012 at Westchester Medical Center.
Born on April 26, 1952 to Frank Burrell and Marion Jarvis Burrell, he was raised in the Bronx and attended Cardinal Spellman High School. He graduated from lona College in 1974 and later earned a Master's Degree in Economics from Fordham University.
On November 13, 1976 he married Kathleen McGuirl of Pelham Manor, his wife of 36 years. In 1979 they bought their home in New Rochelle, where they would raise their children Charles, Meredith and' Robert. Richard was employed by Citibank for 29 years and served as a vice president in the Securities Lendilng division.
In 1988 he was diagnosed with Viral Myocarditis and on April 4, 1995 received a heart transplant at New York Presbyterian Hospital. His transplant, performed by Dr. Mehmet Oz. was featured in an episode of CBS' 48 Hours the same year. He returned to work full-time soon after. His sense of humor and feisty nature saw him through various health setbacks in the ensuing years including a second heart and kidney transplant in 2007. His perseverance and dedication to his family were an inspiration to all who knew him.
Richard was always politically engaged, an avid reader of local and world history and a collector of Lionel toy trains.
He is survived by his wife, three children, his sister Marion Burrell Connelly (Kenneth) of Somers, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
A wake will be held at Pelham Funeral Home (64 Lincoln Ave, Pelham) on Thursday from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Pelham Manor on Friday at 11 am.
