WINES, Margaret (Peggy)
On November 17, 2012, Margaret Wines (nee Elder) of Pelham, NY died at Cornell Medical Center following a brief illness. Peggy was born in the Bronx, NY on July 9, 1936, to Francis Xavier Elder and Gertrude Harran. She was married to Roger A. Wines on February 14, 1959, in Wurzburg, Germany. Their life together over the last 53 years has been an inspiration to their family, friends and colleagues. She was predeceased by her mother and father and her step mother Dorothy Elder. She is survived by her husband, her children Mark, John, Steven, Thomas and Katharine; by her grandchildren Christian, Emily, Olivia, Keith, Megan, Mathew, Victoria, Daniel, Sean, Jennifer, Philip, Christopher, Shannon and Nicholas; and by her sisters Jean Honkanen and Trudy Kelly.
She was a wonderful mother. She loved her children and all her grandchildren with a stubborn ferocity that will never be replaced.
Dr. Wines received her B.S. degree from Cornell University New York Hospital School of Nursing; her M.S. degree in Psychiatric Nursing was conferred by Hunter College; and she received her Ph.D. in Administration, Policy, and Urban Education from Fordham University's Graduate School of Education. Dr. Wines began her academic career as a faculty member at Bronx Community College and Queensborough Community College, where she taught psychiatric nursing.
Dr. Wines served as President and CEO of Helene Fuld College of Nursing from 1980 - September 7, 2012. She nurtured the professional careers of thousands of nurses over the last 45 years. Under her leadership, the College of Nursing provided nursing education to an upwardly mobile, committed, and largely minority (95%) student population enabling Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to achieve an Associate in Applied Sciences degree and to become Registered Nurses (RNs).
In May, 2003 Dr. Wines received the Distinguished Alumni Award for "outstanding contribution to nursing" from Cornell University New York Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. In March, 2004, at the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) meeting, she received a legislative resolution passed by the New York State Senate and Assembly honoring her 25 years of service as President of Helene Fuld College of Nursing.
Her life was full, in accomplishment, in devotion to her family and most of all, in the love she gave to all who were fortunate to know her.
