Murray Alpert of Pelham Manor, NY passed away on Sunday, July 10th. He was 87 years old. Born in New York City to Anna and Louis Alpert, he was the youngest of four boys. Murray Alpert valued education. He went on to graduate from the College of the City of New York in 1952 with a BA in Psychology and then to complete his MS. He attained a PhD in Psychology from New York University.
During the years of the Korean conflict Murray served his country by using his talents in Landstuhl Hospital in Germany. Back in the states, Murray would complete his education and begin a career teaching in the Psychology Department at New York University for 32 years. During these years, Murray met and married his first wife, Betty. Together the two would have his first child, Peter. After Betty passed away, Murray would eventually remarry to Toni and add children to his family with a son Theodore, and Toni's daughter Michelle. He also helped raise Amelia and Eliza with his third wife, Taffy.
Murray's career was a distinguished one as a Professor of Psychology in the Dept. of Psychiatryat NYU as well as Director of Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, NYU; He also was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Pais Vasco, Bilbao, Spain, and elected President of the American Psycopathologica Association in 1984.
Although Murray was dedicated to his work, he always found time to unwind. He was an avid biker, tennis player and swimmer. He loved to travel. He enjoyed discussing current events and was a daily reader of the New York Times. He called Pelham his home for 13 years and shared his time between New York and New Hampshire, where he could fully enjoy the outdoors.
Murray is survived by his son Peter, daughter-in-law Donna, grandsons Christopher, Kevin, Eric and Peter, as well as son Theodore. He is pre-deceased by his first wife Betty and his brothers: Bernie, Harold and Philip.
