Mary “The Queen” Nigro of New Rochelle, NY, passed away on March 17, 2022. She was 94 years young. Mary was born in the Bronx, NY, to Francesco and Antonetta Tortorelli. She was one of three children and attended Our Saviour Roman Catholic School and Jane Addams High School for Academic Careers.
In 1948 Mary met her soon to be husband Benjamin Nigro. Ben and Mary married in 1949. They settled in the Bronx, NY to raise their family. They were married for 49 years and had two wonderful children: Ronald and Mary Ellen. In 1985 Ben and Mary moved to New Rochelle when they purchased their ideal home: A lovely Tudor style with a nice front and back yard.
Mary loved and lived life to the fullest. She was always curious and had an adventurous spirit. She traveled with her son on a heritage tour of Europe, visiting places where her parents lived. She was young at heart and enjoyed hosting and attending parties. She would invite friends and family over for a piano recital and entertain her guests with music and good food and laughing at her missed notes. Mary enjoyed shopping, eating desserts and sweets, crafting, painting, sewing, and writing. Mary wrote a book of family stories which she titled “Celebration of Life” that was written as a celebration of her family.
Mary will be remembered as a caring, creative, loving, free spirited, mother, and doting grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her son; Ron Nigro and Kyle Ke, her daughter; Mary Ellen Messmer and by her two beloved grandchildren; Ricky and Cady Messmer. Mary is predeceased by her husband; Ben Nigro, her parents, and siblings.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at The Church of the Holy Family located at 83 Clove Rd, New Rochelle, NY, on Monday, March 21st at 10:30am. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. For more information or to leave a condolence please visit www.pelhamfuneral.com
