Mary C. Amann, A longtime resident of Pelham, NY, passed away on March 4, 2022 at the age of 87 years old. Mary was born in Tarrytown, NY to Daniel and Margaret (Heaney) Crawford, who both emigrated from Ireland. Mary was one of two children. She was raised in the Bronx where she attended Evander Childs High School where she would meet and marry her High School sweetheart Charles of 58 years who predeceased her in 2017.
Mary was a 1956 graduate of SUNY New Paltz with a Degree in Elementary Education. Mary taught Kindergarten at Mamaroneck Avenue School in the Mamaroneck School District from 1956 until 1969 when her youngest son was born. She started teaching again at the Weekday Nursery School in New Rochelle. Shortly after returning to teaching, she became the Director of the Weekday Nursery, a position she stayed with for over 30 years. There are countless people in both New Rochelle and Pelham who had their children start their early schooling with Mary and the teachers at the Weekday Nursery School. Mary made sure that all of her students had a positive experience at school where they began their journey of learning. One of Mary’s favorite times during the school day was playing the piano and having the children sing. After Weekday, Mary returned to teach part-time at the Barnard School in New Rochelle, NY to stay busy. Mary did all of this while raising her two boys. Family was the most important thing to her.
Many people said Mary wore her religion on her sleeve. She was always volunteering or helping out in any capacity at church or at school. Mary was a Trustee for Beechwood Cemetery in New Rochelle, NY and later went on to serve as Vice-President of the Beechwood Cemetery Board. She volunteered countless hours as part of the League for Service of the New Rochelle Hospital. Mary attended Huguenot Memorial Church in Pelham Manor, NY, where she was an Elder. She was also a Past Elder at First Presbyterian Church in New Rochelle, NY. Mary and her husband were past members of the Larchmont Shore Club as well as being extremely active in Pelham.
Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and sister; She leaves behind her sons; Charles Scott and his wife Shelagh Amann and Kenneth ; her two grandchildren, Molly and Jack Amann; a Brother James and his wife Karen Crawford; a nephew, Daniel Crawford and two nieces Sarah Spruiell and Nichole Adamos. She will be missed by her extended family, and many friends. Mary is predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years, Charles Amann.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Ave., Pelham NY on Wednesday March 9, 2022, from 4-8 PM. A Burial Service will take place at Huguenot Memorial Church in Pelham Manor located at 901 Pelhamdale Ave on Thursday March 10, 2022, at 10:00. Burial will follow at Beechwood Cemetery in New Rochelle.
