Surrounded by his loving family, Luke Nicholas Gallagher of Yonkers, New York passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 17th 2019. He was 12 years old. Born 11lbs 4oz Luke was a happy go lucky child. Luke was raised in Yonkers where he attended Sacred Heart Grade School. A natural athlete Luke got involved in sports at a young age. He loved basketball, Gaelic football, baseball and was passionate about soccer. New York City football Club and Man United were his favorite teams. He played soccer for Yonkers United and McLean Heights, Gaelic football for Rangers and baseball and basketball for McLean Heights.Â
Luke was also an entertaining lad. He had a contagious sense of humor even when the chips were down. His selfless nature always made sure he kept a smile on people's faces. Luke was diagnosed with bone cancer on 7/7/17. He accepted on June 4th 2018 that his cancer was incurable and decided to spend the remainder of his time at home with family. His strong faith and prayers were a comfort to everyone around him. He was looking forward to making his confirmation and had picked the Apostle Mark as his confirmation name.
Whilst battling osteosarcoma, Luke enjoyed playing video games. He was well able to hold his own at Rocket League and Fortnite which kept him in close contact with his friends. He even played with family and friends in Ireland. He was an avid and super-fast reader! Lego and Star Wars were also great passions of his.
Luke will be remembered as an incredibly bright kid who maintained an incredible sense of humor and dignity throughout his battle. His short life is an inspiration and encouragement to many. He will be missed by everyone one who's life he touched. His level of maturity and openness will be long remembered by his family and friends.Â
Luke leaves behind his parents Paul and Cara, his siblings Eoghan, Adrian, Rory, Teresa, Anna and Matthew, his grandparents Larry and Carmel Geraghty (Ireland), his many aunts, uncles, cousins and large circle of friends and school mates. He is predeceased by his grandparents Eugene and Teresa Gallagher, his aunts Collette and Breege Gallagher and cousin Aine Melissa Geraghty.
Luke's life will be honored and remembered on Monday January 21st from 2:00 - 4:00pm and 6:30 - 8:30pm at the Pelham Funeral Home, 64 Lincoln Ave., Pelham NY. A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday January 22nd at St. Mary/Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church located at 23 South High Street, Mount Vernon, NY. followed by a burial directly afterwards at Gate Of Heaven Cemetery, 10 W Stevens Ave, Valhalla, NY 10352.
