Joan Marie Szabo of New Rochelle, New York, passed away on April 14, 2023 at the age of 87. Born in Mt. Vernon to Ralph and Mary Nordone, Joan was the eighth child of sixteen children. She was raised in Mt. Vernon where she attended Edison High School. She married Pat Zubini and had two children.
In 1970, Joan met and married Steve Szabo, who was the love of her life. Joan was a phenomenal cook and baker; She was known for her delicious Angel Food cake, apple turnovers, and her exceptional gravy! Together, they enjoyed making Steve’s favorite Hungarian dishes, like Stuffed Cabbage and Paprikash. She loved to go to Atlantic City and going to Wildwood Crest, NJ, with family on vacations.
Joan will be remembered as feisty, loving, thoughtful, and generous and will be missed by her entire family, especially her grandchildren, who would ask her to make her delicious gravy when she visited them.
Joan is survived by her son, Michael Zubini and his wife, Patti; her daughter, Patricia Weiss-Zubini, five grandchildren, and her great grandson. She will be missed by her remaining sisters and brother; Barbara Ingrassia, Paula Savino, Linda Nordone, Paul Nordone, many nieces and nephews who adored her, and all who were blessed to know her.
A celebration of Joan’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham, NY on Wednesday, April 19th from 4 – 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Catharine’s Church, located at 25 Second Avenue, Pelham, NY, on Thursday, April 20th at 10:00 AM.
