Georgia Turner

Georgia Turner was born Georgia Woodard, July 13, 1925 in Lee County, Sanford, North Carolina. She became Georgia Monroe after the marriage of her mother, Nellie Woodard to James Monroe. Georgia attended Jordan Sellars High School. She left school early at the age 13 to become a cook in Burlington, North Carolina.

She moved to Harlem, New York City in 1943. There she was trained as a seamstress and milliner. She had one daughter Denise (Dee Dee) and one grandson, Kahlil Michael McDaniel. She later married her childhood boyfriend, William Wilbert Turner on December 22, 1962 and was widowed in 1993. She retired from Madame Alexander's Doll Factory in Manhattanville, New York in 1991 as a doll dressmaker.

Everyone knew Georgia as a fun loving person who enjoyed dancing, playing cards with family and friends, traveling and cooking for family and friends. Her southern baked goods were sought after, especially her cakes, pies and biscuits.

She sewed choir robes for church groups. She sewed for wedding parties and made her daughter's gown and veil. She helped her daughter sewing class costumes, curtains and pillows. She conducted a class at her daughter's school (CS 234) for parents, "How to make Southern Style Biscuits" for African American History Month.

In 2002, she sold her Bronx home and came to live with her daughter and grandson in Mt. Vernon, New York. She continued to travel to North Carolina yearly, going on church trips and going on Mother – Daughter trips to Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Washington and Maryland. She enjoyed apple picking, Broadway Theater and dining out.

She is survived by her daughter Denise McDaniel Tarrots, grandson Kahlil Michael McDaniel and cousins Norma Lee Thompson (George Thompson) and their children and grandchildren, Amy, Kim and granddaughter.

She is dearly missed by her goddaughters Joyce Bentley of Middletown NY (and children), Rhonda Bentley-Lewis (Eldron Lewis) of Massachusetts, and their children; Michael Bentley (Francesca) of Middletown, NY; Jaronia Karl of Mamaroneck NY, and Mashawn Bennett (Patrick Bennett) of Colorado Springs, Co., and a host of other extended family and dearly loved friends.
