On his 28th wedding anniversary, Gary McGovern of Woodlawn, New York passed away on August 8th 2020. He was 55 years old. Born in Kensington, England to Irish parents, Gary was one of 7 children. He moved home to Ireland when he was nine months old with his parents Oliver and Breda McGovern. They would settle in Tralee, Co. Kerry where Gary would attend the Christian Brothers National School and the Tralee Technical Secondary School. Gary excelled in school and also in sports. Gary was the Munster boxing champion at 14 years of age. After completing the Group Certificate in Secondary School, Gary went to work as a confectioner for Kingdom Cakes and later Mahony's Bakery in Tralee. From Mahony's, Gary would go to work for Kerry Fashions. Kerry Fashion's was the jackpot of his career as it was at Kerry Fashion's Gary would meet the love of his life; Noreen Flynn. Gary and Noreen would marry in 1992 and live in New York.
After moving to New York, Gary went to work as a painter and later as a superintendent in Woodlawn as well as working in maintenance in a Private building in Manhattan. In 2009 Gary went on to work in one of the first Green buildings in Manhattan, "The Visionaire building in Battery Park". Gary took great pride in his work and was well liked by the tenants. In his spare time Gary loved to watch Formula One car racing and Soccer. An avid Ferrari and Manchester City Fan, Gary also loved to fish and watch Star Wars with his wife Noreen. But most of all Gary was a family man. He loved to play in the park with his children Gary and Skye, take trips to Lake George and Ireland. He was always there for his children and they were always there for himâ¦especially when Man city would loose a soccer game.
Gary will be remembered as an extremely kind, loving, and generous man. He wouldn't hurt a fly. Truth be told he would gently remove mice from the sticky traps and set them free. He will also be remembered as being non-judgmental and not having a mean bone in his body. He had an infectious laugh and was always the life of the party.
Gary is survived by his wife Noreen, his children Gary and Skye, his father Oliver, his twin brother Paul, his sisters Janet and Sharon, his brothers Liam and Sean.
