Fred Michael Gervat of Pelham NY passed away at New York Presbyterian Hospital on April 21, 2018. He was 77 years old.
Fred was born in Flushing Queens to Vincent Gervat and Frances Dmock. He was raised in the Bronx where he attended local schools before graduating from Fordham University. Fred loved studying languages and learning. He held a Masters Degree in English from Creighton University, and also earned a Masters Degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute.
After graduating from College and teaching at various schools for several years, Fred went to work as a teacher in PS 56. It was there he would meet his wife of 38 years. The couple would marry in 1979 and eventually move to Pelham. Fred spent most of his life working as a librarian at Parsons Jr. High School. In his spare time he volunteered as a Boy Scout leader where he served in many roles, and where he was an Eagle Scout and Vigil Honor member. He loved to travel and had visited all 50 states. He was an avid reader and loved to volunteer. He was an active member of Holy Family Church, Rotary and the Knights of Columbus.
He will be remembered as a humorous, kind and social person who cared deeply for his family, friends and those he volunteered with.
Fred is survived by his wife Joan, his son Tom (Mirtha Montoya); his sisters Joan Sabba and Barbara Shea; his brother Thomas Gervat and his nieces and nephews. He will be missed by everyone he knew.
A Mass of Catholic Burial will take place at Holy Family Church located at 83 Clove Road in New Rochelle on Tuesday, April 24th at 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at Amawalk Hill Cemetery in Yorktown Heights, NY. For more information or to leave a condolence please visit www.pelhamfuneral.com.
