Edward Fitzgerald

Edward P. Fitzgerald died at his home in Manhattan on Monday, August 22, 2022 after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 84. A proud native of Castleisland, Co. Kerry, Ireland, Eddie emigrated to the US at the age of nineteen. Arriving by boat, he started first in Pittsburgh, but made his way to NYC. After serving in the US Army, Eddie returned to NYC where he worked as a bartender in some of the finer establishments 1960s New York had to offer. Afterwards, he was a doorman for more than 20 years and a member of the 32BJ Union. During retirement, Eddie traveled widely by air and sea, and considered St. Petersburg, Buenos Aires, and the landscape of Montana some of his favorite visits. Additionally, Eddie loved his adopted home of NYC, and enjoyed his walks around the Central Park Reservoir and along the East River. He never lost his “Kerry Accent”, and enjoyed his annual trip to Ireland every June.  His family fondly remember how he would count down the weeks until his trip. He was a long time member of the Kerrymen’s association in Yonkers, and proudly marched behind the Kerry banner every St. Patrick’s Day. 

Eddie is survived by his niece, Marie (Donnellan) Morneau of Bethel, CT., her husband, David, and their children Thomas, and Caroline. He is also survived by his nephew, Brian Donnellan of NYC, and his husband, Andrew Miller. Eddie is predeceased by his sister, Ann (Fitzgerald) Donnellan, and brother, David Fitzgerald. 

A celebration of Eddie’s life will take place at the Pelham Funeral Home located at 64 Lincoln Avenue, Pelham,NY on Friday August 26th from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY.

The family wishes Eddie a peaceful rest, and consider themselves lucky for experiencing his pragmatism, loyalty, and charming sense of humor.
