David Michael Carberry

Dr. David M. Carberry of Pelham, NY died of natural causes at the age of 91 on Thursday, April 17, 2014. Born in Brooklyn in 1923, he was a decorated World War II Army veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Gen. Patton's Third Army. He graduated from Providence College in 1947 and from Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia in 1951. He then went on to specialize in thoracic surgery. After a residency at Buffalo General Hospital, Dr. Carberry practiced surgery in Manhattan for over 40 years. He rose to the position of Chief of Thoracic surgery at the Harlem Hospital, as well as holding long-standing surgical appointments at Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He was an American College of Surgeons fellow and was designated as thoracic surgeon-on-call during presidential visits to New York City under the Carter Administration. During this time, Dr. Carberry's practice also included that of in-house physician for Rockefeller Center and he was issued a police surgeon's badge by the New York City's police department in recognition of years of emergency procedures he performed on police officers. While being passionate about his medical practice, he was widely known as die-hard New York Giants football fan and insatiable sports enthusiast, in general. A dedicated Providence College alumnus, Dr. Carberry happily held the office of President of the New York Alumni Club for numerous years. His passing was preceded by his beloved wife, Joan, who died in October 2004 and to whom he was married for 55 years. He was a devoted father and grandfather, and is survived by his children, Marcella, Jeanne, David Michael Jr., and Maggie; and by his grandchildren, David Michael III, Ryan Christopher, and Reilly Jeanne. Calling hours are Monday, April 21st from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at the Pelham Funeral Home and a funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, April 22nd at 10:00am at the Church of St. Catherine in Pelham.
