Andre Atkinson of Mount Vernon, NY passed away unexpectedly on October 24th, 2021. He was 56 years old. Born in Brooklyn to Edith Atkinson, Andre was an only child. He was lovingly raised in Brooklyn where he graduated from James Madison High School. After graduation, Andre would attend the State University of New York at New Paltz. It was during his time at New Paltz that Andre would meet the love of his life, Cheryl David. They were introduced by his roommate, Charles Chambers, and as they say, the rest is history.
Andre started his long-lasting career with the New York City Department of Corrections in January 1991. He enjoyed working in law enforcement. Andre married his wife Cheryl in September of that same year. They moved to Rockland County where they were later blessed with their daughter Ashley in 1993 who was Andre’s pride and joy. The family later moved to Orange County in 2000 where they resided for 18 years. Andre loved spending time in his home playing pool and blasting music. In his leisure, Andre also loved to tailgate, attend sports games, travel with family and friends, listen to all kinds of music, and smoke Cohiba cigars with a glass of Johnny Walker Blue or Black Label.
After 25 years with the Department of Corrections, Andre retired in 2016. Two years later, he would relocate to Mount Vernon, NY where he spent the last 3 years restoring his new home with Cheryl. His home was his castle. Andre also worked as a security officer in Manhattan to pass some of his free time during retirement and earned many certifications in Fire Safety.
Andre will be remembered as dependable, loving, supportive, active, easy-going, and family oriented. He worked hard and played hard (real hard), yet family was always first. Andre’s enduring relationship with his wife was indescribable. They were each other’s ride or die and they always had each others back. He was extremely proud of his daughter, Ashley, who followed his footsteps in law enforcement while also earning her Master’s in Social Work and NYS licensure. Andre had a special connection with his mother and doted on her always. They enjoyed watching and going to sporting events and passing time together on her beloved terrace.
Andre will be deeply missed by his wife of 30 years Cheryl, his daughter Ashley, and his mother Edith. He is survived by his brother-in-law Russell, sister-in-law Pamela, niece Ebony, and his nephew Lawrence, along with his many Uncles, Aunts, and cousins as well as his extended family and friends. He will also be deeply missed by Charles, his Brother From A Different Mother, and his Corrections family.
